what should a new air blower unit cost?
the motor in our air conditioning blower (attached to the furnace, and not the unit). I've been given a price to replace this particular piece and a full replacement price for the unit -- both of which I found to be absurd. Can someone tell me what the price of the unit and labor should be to fix the blower? What would the full replacement of the unit cost? Thank you.
welllllllll, depending on the age of the unit, (outside, inside, everything), is a big expense. high efficiency new unit will give you some pay back on lower utility bills. high efficiency, duct work intact, 3,5 ton cooling capacity, gas furnace or heat pump, licensed contractor, in texas, you are looking at 8500.00 to 10,000.00, depending. that's bare bones high efficency. no split system or anything complicated.
regardless, a new indoor fan motor, my cost can be anywhere from 100.00 to 300.00 depending. licensed contractor will pay about 25% less. if it's a high tech motor that is controled by a circuit board, the price can get pretty high. that's probably not your case. and then for the install, assuming you have a squirell cage fan, that's another couple of hundred. SO, you are looking at from 300.00 to 500.00 for the indoor fan motor, minimum.
DIY, 100.00 to 300.00 and lot's of problems. these motors are multiple speed. ac mode runs in high speed. furnace runs in low speed. don't make it run backwards. in other words, mark all wires with a diagram. WRITE IT DOWN! if you choose to DIY, take the old motor with you and copy alllllll of the information off of the air handler name plate. then you will have to find a distributor that will sell you the correct motor. (that can be a problem area in texas. we are super regulated.) i always just find somebody at the parts place with a license and give 'em a ten to buy my motor, you know?
the squierll cage/fan also has to be balanced correctly on the motor. some of these fan motors are universal and you may or may not have to cut down the shaft. probably not, but keep that in mind. (saws all)

OH, one other thing...ALWAYS put in a new capacitor when you replace a fan motor. that's another 50.00.
